Current Status of Indian Media: A Declining Freedom of Press

By: Tarannum Nafees

India, a democratic nation, has a written constitution that governs it. Journalism in India is considered the fourth pillar of the constitution, serving as a bridge between the people and the government. The foundation of Indian journalism has been remarkably strong since ancient times, inspiring and contributing to India’s struggle for independence. Many renowned journalists like Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi, Raja Ram Mohan Roy, and Bhartendu are remembered for their exemplary work. It is often said that the media of a nation reflects its true condition, just like a mirror.

Since 2014, India’s ranking in the World Press Freedom Index has been consistently declining. Out of 180 countries, India now ranks 161, highlighting the grave situation of Indian media. There is only a small section of the media that continues to practice independent journalism. Most of the media is unable to make independent decisions due to fear of political power. The integrity of Indian media is weakening, and it is crucial to break these chains and revive the freedom of expression for citizens. If not, Indian media will remain merely in name, losing its essence and purpose.
